Lyrics and Lunch

Lyrics and Lunch helps local churches provide friendship, fun, support and faith for those in our communities living with dementia and those caring for them.

One of the main problems for people living with Dementia and their carers, is loneliness. Lyrics and Lunch creates community for these people and gives them fun through a network of friendly singing and lunch groups.

Music is a fantastic way of reaching people with dementia. The brain remembers songs, even the lyrics of songs, sung years ago, and it can help them feel normal again for a while.

To replicate this project your church will need:
  • At least six volunteers who have compassion for older people;
  • An attractive room with comfortable seating for the sing-a-long;
  • A space to sit at tables and eat close to a kitchen;
  • A catering plan - either producing the food in the kitchen, or bringing it in;
  • A confident person to lead the singing; playing an instrument a bonus;

Steps to run this project:
  1. Church based - partner with a church or two in the neighbourhood to run the project;
  2. Team - recruit volunteers comprising a team leader, singer/s, catering team and others with a heart for serving;
  3. Venue - consider facilities, accessibility and position in the neighbourhood when choosing;
  4. Training - provided online by Lyrics and Lunch UK;
  5. Orientation - attend an hour long online presentation of ‘Dementia Friends’;
  6. Resource - a songbook compiled by Lyrics and Lunch is available for order, with all copyright issues resolved;
